From weather damage to car accidents and vandalism, there are many reasons you may need car glass repair. Dealing with a broken window can be intimidating if you’re not armed with the proper information. Follow these three steps to address your broken window safely and efficiently.

Preparing Your Window for Car Glass Repair

1. Clean Up the Broken Glass

Wearing thick work gloves, pick up the large pieces of glass and place them in a bag or container for disposal. Gently break off any glass that is still attached to the car. Vacuum up smaller pieces inside and around the car with a shop vac. Be sure to vacuum around the windows, in the seat cracks, and under the seats as well.

2. Call the Proper People

They may send a representative to meet you on the scene or require that you take photos of the damage. If the accident was serious enough, the police might also need to be called. For minor breaks or damage, call your mechanic to schedule a car glass repair appointment. You may even be able to bring your car in on the same day.

3. Cover the Broken Window in Plastic

Line a durable and clear plastic bag along the inside of your window, taping all around the edge to seal it. If inclement weather is on the forecast, or you can’t make it to a mechanic for a car glass repair within a day or two, repeat the same process on the outside. This ensures that you have double-layer protection. Never use black or opaque materials, as this can decrease the driver’s visibility.
