Modern cars have a lot of lights and symbols on their dashboards. Understanding them will not only benefits your vehicle, but also your own safety. Hours of engineering have been spent on getting your on-board computer to tell you what's going on under the hood. Don't let these hours have been spent in vain!

Although some of the symbols have changed over the 38 years that Stillwater Auto Clinic has been in business in Stillwater, MN, these experts know that the following symbols are can indicate major problems with your car, and should not be ignored:

  • Batteries: A red battery symbol means you should stop your engine immediately and seek roadside assistance. This may mean that that the voltage level is below normal and the charging system isn’t working properly.
  • Check Engine: If you notice that there is a symbol in the shape of an engine that’s lit up your car may be having problems in any of the following five areas
    • Oxygen Sensor
    • Gas Cap
    • Catalytic Converter
    • Mass Airflow Sensor
    • Spark Plugs or Plug Wires
  • Tire Pressure Light: This symbol looks like an exclamation point with a parentheses around it and a bar underneath, and it indicates that your tire inflation is down at least 25%.
  • Oil Light: A symbol of an oil can, or illuminated text that says “OIL LEVEL,” means your oil is low. Check it as soon as possible. If your oil level is fine but the symbol remains, get to your local car repair shop as soon as possible.
