As many dentists tell their patients, practicing at-home dental care is crucial for a bright, healthy smile. Even if you’re diligent about brushing and flossing daily, using the wrong technique can harm your oral health. Mistakes will increase your risk of cavities and gum disease. Here are a few common ones you should avoid.

4 Dental Care Mistakes to Avoid

1. Flossing Too Harshly

Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between the teeth and other hard to reach spots. However, flossing harshly won’t make your mouth any cleaner; it will only cause damage to your gums. Instead, use a gentle touch.

2. Choosing the Wrong Toothbrush

dentistIt’s important to use a quality toothbrush. Look for one with soft or medium bristles to prevent tooth enamel damage. Also, make sure the brush head is small enough to maneuver around your mouth, as this makes it easier to access every area.

3. Flossing Your Teeth Too Often

Make sure you’re flossing at least once per day. While doing so more frequently might seem better, it can actually damage your gums and cause redness, bleeding, and tenderness. Eventually, you’ll expose the roots, leading to cavities and decay. Floss once in the morning or at night before bed.

4. Brushing Too Quickly

Brush for at least two minutes, twice per day. When you don’t spend enough time, you miss chewing surfaces in your mouth, leading to plaque buildups, oral bacteria, and decay. Also, make sure to brush the top, bottom, front, and back of each tooth for at least a few seconds.
