You may only use your lawn mower once a week, but you need it to work reliably when it’s time to get your grass under control. Unfortunately, even a handy homeowner might see the lawn mower as a tool that can’t be fixed without professional help. Believe it or not, many lawn mower repairs can be done easily at home, saving you time and money. In addition to having a professional tune-up done every spring, there are some simple ways to troubleshoot frequent problems.

Common Lawn Mower Issues and How to Fix Them

1. It Won’t Start

If your mower won’t start, the most common explanation is you’re out of gas. If you recently filled your tank, then your fuel just might not be flowing properly. Tap the side of the carburetor to help move everything along toward the engine. If this doesn’t work, remove the spark plug and clean off any debris, then reconnect and tighten it.

2. It Loses Power

Raise the cutting height on your mower to move it more easily, and go back over the same sections multiple times if necessary. It’s also a good idea to clean the underside of the mower if there’s any buildup of debris or clippings. If this doesn’t fix the problem, you may need to clean a dirty spark plug or replace the air filter.

3. The Starter Rope Won’t Move

If you can’t get the starter rope to move, you probably have the flywheel brake engaged. Make sure you pull the bar all the way down to the handle before trying to pull the rope. If you’ve already disengaged the brake and that’s not fixing the problem, check underneath your mower for debris and clear it out after disconnecting the spark plug.
