Although it's commonly used during surgery, the idea of sedation dentistry can seem intimidating. While dentists are well-trained to sedate patients, it’s still helpful to understand the process before your appointment. If you’re preparing for oral surgery, here’s what you need to know.

A Guide to Sedation Dentistry

When is sedation typically used?

Sedation dentistry helps keep patients calm during periodontal disease treatments, root canals, wisdom teeth removal surgery, and dental implant procedures. However, a dentist may offer sedation as an option for everyday treatments, including teeth cleanings and dental fillings, if you have especially sensitive teeth or tend to gag when tools are in your mouth.

Does sedation dentistry eliminate pain?

sedation dentistryBy applying anesthetic to the surgery site, the dentist will numb any pain. You may experience pressure, but it won’t be painful. In fact, although you may not fall asleep, you'll be relaxed, making time pass by quickly.

What kinds of sedation dentistry options are available?

Most dentist offices use either oral or IV sedation. For the former, the dentist will place a mask over your face and administer laughing gas. The latter is similar to what happens at hospitals; they’ll insert an IV tube under your skin to fill your system with a relaxing medication. Finally, sedation pills are another option.

How safe is sedation?

It is completely safe as long as it is performed by a licensed and trained dentist. They will know what dosage of medication is appropriate for your body and monitor your health throughout the procedure. Oral and IV sedation can both be halted right away if there are any problems.

What happens after sedation?

You may still lack awareness for a while after surgery, even if the dentist gives you oxygen to help clear out the medication. Make sure that you have a friend or family member available to drive you home. Although you may experience dry mouth or hiccups afterward, those symptoms will fade quickly, and there should be no serious or lasting side effects.
