Blowouts are typically the result of improper tire pressure or old, worn tires. They don’t occur often, but when they do, it can be a startling and dangerous experience. Knowing how to react to the situation will keep you and your passengers safe and sound. Here are three steps to follow if you experience a blowout while driving.

3 Steps to Handle a Tire Blowout

1. Maintain Control

Stay calm when you hear that loud noise, as this will prevent you from worsening the situation. Don’t brake or overcorrect by jerking the wheel in the opposite direction. Instead, keep your foot on the gas pedal and gently correct your steering wheel to move straight ahead. Keeping your wheels moving will help you maintain control. Gently ease off the gas and pull to the side to slow down and pull off the road where it is safe to do so.

2. Turn on Your Hazards

tiresYour hazard lights tell other drivers that your vehicle is stopped. It will draw attention to your car so that other drivers will see you as they approach and avoid your vehicle. If you have hazard triangles or road flares in your car, set those out behind your car to warn oncoming traffic of your presence.

3. Get Your Tires Replaced

If you have a spare tire and have the necessary equipment and experience to change it, go ahead and do so. Otherwise, call for a tow truck. Do not attempt to keep driving, as this is unsafe and will destroy your rims. Either way, head immediately to an auto repair shop for new tires. They may recommend replacing two tires rather than one, even if only one was damaged. This is because tire replacements in pairs will keep your vehicle balanced on the road.
