Bowling enthusiasts know the thrill of throwing a strike. The sight of the ball sailing down the lane and knocking every pin is exhilarating. While some of this is due to luck, there are a few techniques you can employ to master the game and experience more than the occasional strike. To help you impress all your friends with your expert moves, here are a few tips for throwing your ball successfully every time.

How to Throw a Strike Every Time You Bowl

1. Start Light

Strikes don’t require extra force or heavier weights. A light ball is acceptable, especially if you’re learning the ropes and want to get a feel of the techniques that work for you. As you become more experienced, you can switch to a heavier ball.

2. Walk Tall

Stand up straight and with authority as you stride toward the lane. Use your dominant hand to guide your stance— right-handers should keep their right foot in front of them, and vice versa. When you step forward, bring the ball down, then up on the next step. As you hit your fourth step, release the ball and use your opposing leg to stabilize your body.

3. Focus on the Lane

bowlingIt’s natural to aim your focus directly on the pins, but that can throw you off because you’re thinking too much about their positioning. To remedy this, concentrate on the arrow on the lane itself. Ideally, your ball should run directly over that mark to hit the center of the row of pins.

4. Release Effectively

Releasing the ball at the wrong moment can throw your aim off. Think of your arm as a pendulum when you’re positioned. As you bring the ball up with natural force, you’ll feel a pressure in your wrist because gravity forces it back downward. This is the point at which you should release it—in as relaxed a manner as possible. Remember, keep your eyes on the arrow.

5. Follow Through

Don’t stare at the ball as it travels down the bowling lane. Your movement isn’t complete until you follow through by swinging your arm in the natural upward motion after release. Don’t let go and stop short, which can change the direction of the toss.
