Sniffling, sneezing, and an itchy throat aren’t the only symptoms of allergies. Dust, pollen, smoke, perfume, pollution, and other allergens can cause problems with your eyes as well. Although many allergy symptoms, like itchy, watery eyes, can also indicate an eye infection, if your doctor rules that out, there are ways to find relief.

5 Ways to Soothe Eye Allergies

1. Avoid Exposure to Allergens

Stay indoors when pollen counts are high, usually in the mid-morning and early evening. Use air conditioners rather than fans that can draw in allergens. Wear sunglasses outdoors to block allergens from your eyes. Use a pillow cover that blocks dust mites. Clean with a damp mop rather than a broom to prevent allergens from getting into the air.

2. Don’t Rub Your Eyes

When your eyes are itchy, resist the urge to rub them. Not only will this make the problem worse, but it can also lead to an eye infection by spreading bacteria. Use a cold compress instead: soak a clean washcloth in ice water,  then lie down with the cloth over your eyes for 5-10 minutes to bring relief.

3. Use Artificial Tears

4. Take Allergy Medication

Over-the-counter medications can help alleviate eye allergy symptoms by blocking the histamines that cause discomfort. They can be especially useful when eye irritation is accompanied by other symptoms, such as stuffy nose.

5. Use Decongestant Eye Drops

If red, itchy, and watery eyes are your only symptom, using decongestant drops can help. Although they may sting a bit on the first contact, they constrict the blood vessels to reduce discomfort. These drops should only be used for a few days, though, since they can lead to increased redness and discomfort with prolonged use.
