Math is a valuable subject that teaches problem-solving skills and increases brain functionality. While every child develops math skills at their own pace, falling significantly behind can lead to struggles in other subjects. To strengthen their math skills, your child may need outside help, like tutoring or extra practice time. Look for these signs to determine if your child is falling behind in math class.

How to Know It’s Time for Math Tutoring

1. They Have Trouble With Mental Math

Mental math allows your child to calculate simple problems without using a pencil and paper. Children who struggle with this ability will count using their fingers or will search for paper to write out the problem.

2. They’re Anxious About Quizzes and Tests

It isn’t unusual to feel nervous the morning of a big test. But constant anxiety before class, crying during quizzes, or refusal to attend school on test days are all signs that your child is struggling. You might notice this behavior only for math, and not for other subjects.

3. They Say They Hate Math Math Tutoring

Lack of class participation and procrastinating on their math homework because they “hate it” are signs of struggle. Your child may also complain that the teacher doesn’t help—which can be true in some cases. But in other instances, your child could be pushing the blame.

4. They Give Up Easily

Instead of trying an alternative way to solve the problem, a child struggling in math might give up because they feel like they can’t do it or the subject is too difficult.

5. They Struggle With Concepts of Time

In general, children begin understanding basic time concepts at age 5. If your young child struggles with days of the week, or the idea of mornings and evenings, they may be falling behind and in need of tutoring.
