The names SUV and crossover are occasionally used interchangeably by some companies depending on the market. When SUVs reached a point in the consumer’s eye to be less fuel-efficient, they were called crossovers. Chevrolet® distinctly separates these vehicles into two categories, so it’s easy for the consumer to understand. Here is the main difference between these types of vehicles.

SUV

The SUV uses a truck’s platform and offers a body-on-frame construction. This gives the vehicle increased flexibility in the chassis, which is preferred for off-road performance. This platform is also used on large commercial trucks. The significance is the ease of repair. If a vehicle is in an accident, there is a chance the chassis is not affected, so the cost of repairs can be minimal compared to an accident with chassis damage. This construction is also the preferred choice for towing. Some examples of this type of vehicle are the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban.

Crossover

ChevroletCrossovers are built from a car’s platform and offer unibody construction. This form of construction builds the body and frame as a single unit. These vehicles are generally lighter, offer better fuel savings, and have built-in crumple zones for safety. However, they are much more expensive to repair since the chassis and body are connected. Due to the design of safety crumple zones, frames have to be repaired by authorized technicians who have access to the right equipment. Some strong examples of crossovers are the Chevrolet Trax, Equinox, and Traverse.
