It’s a bit of an understatement to say there are a lot of types of motor oils out there. Each performs best under certain circumstances to meet the unique needs of different cars and driving styles. The right oil will properly clean, lubricate, and cool your engine to keep it at peak performance, but how do you know what to ask for? Before you head in for your next oil change, here’s how to determine which grade is right for your vehicle.

Oil Change Guide to Choosing Viscosity & Type

Choosing Your Weight

Check your vehicle owner’s manual for the recommended oil weight or viscosity. Using oil with the recommended viscosity is the most important factor when it’s time for your oil change. This number refers to the fluid’s resistance to flow—that is, how easily it will move between your engine parts. A too-thin fluid may burn off in high temperatures, while a too-thick viscosity will make it hard to start your car and get the parts moving.

oil changeYour manual will give the number for the oil rated at 0 and at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, so it has two numbers, formatted as 10W-40. The higher the number, the thicker and more difficult to move the oil will be at that temperature. If you’re comparing the two oils of 10W-30 and 10W-40, for example, you know that they have the same viscosity when they’re cold. Once the engine is running and the oil heats up, the 10W-40 will stay thicker than the 10W-30.

Additive Options

Some oils have additives in them to meet specific needs. For example, high-mileage oil is designed for older cars. This has additives in it that are designed to help the aging engine, such as a seal conditioner to restore the shape and flexibility of your rubber seals. Other additives may include detergents or corrosion inhibitors. Your mechanic will tell you whether they recommend any additives; they’re usually best for aging cars or those under unusual stress, such as a vehicle used for towing.
