Your home’s HVAC system is essential for keeping every member of your family comfortable — that includes your pets. However, dogs, cats, and other animals can also cause trouble for heating and cooling equipment if you’re not careful. With some simple adjustments and help from a qualified HVAC contractor, you should be able to keep your system in proper working order even with pets around.

Do:

Change filters more frequently.

Your HVAC filters are responsible for catching solid materials as they travel through your ventilation system. Once filters get full of dust, pet hair, and other debris, it becomes more difficult for air to pass through them and the filters can’t catch other materials as effectively. If you have pets, especially ones that shed, you need to check filters once a month or more and change them whenever there’s buildup.

Get your air sanitized.

Changing filters is a good start, but some pet hair and dander can still get stuck elsewhere in your air ducts. To prevent major blockages and improve indoor air quality, have your ducts sanitized by a professional HVAC contractor periodically. This method scrubs the surface of the duct without releasing more debris into the air or disturbing the insulation around the system, maintaining your home’s indoor air quality.

Don’t:

Leave the outdoor AC unit exposed.

hvac contractorYour air conditioner’s outdoor unit is responsible for releasing heat to the outdoor air. For that heat transfer to work as efficiently as possible, the unit needs to be fairly clean and clear of debris. Prevent your pets from peeing on the unit or digging up dirt or plants around it by putting up a small fence or barrier around the perimeter.

Turn off your system when you leave for the day.

Some people prefer to turn their heat and air off or way down when they leave each day in order to save money on utilities. However, extreme temperature shifts can be harmful to animals, especially in the summer. If you want to save, just adjust the temperature by a couple of degrees so your pets are still comfortable and happy.
