September is the perfect month to prepare your HVAC system for fall; it is still technically summer but usually cool enough to avoid turning on the air conditioning. Use this time to ensure your heating and cooling system is ready for cold weather to prevent issues such as costly breakdowns and repairs during a serious freeze. Review these tips before getting started.

How to Prepare Your HVAC System for Fall & Winter

1. Seal Air Leaks

Perform an energy audit around your home to eliminate air leaks. Use caulk and weatherstripping materials to fill foundation cracks and holes, as well as gaps around windows and doors. Sealing your home not only boosts HVAC efficiency by putting less stress on the system, but it also helps keep insects and rodents out.

2. Clean or Replace the Filter

Check the system’s air filter before cooler weather starts. Clean the filter if it isn’t past its expiration date or replace the component. A clogged air filter interferes with heating and cooling efficiency because it compromises ventilation. It also decreases indoor air quality because it doesn’t trap dust, animal dander, mold spores, and other particles.

3. Schedule Duct Cleaning & Repair

Have a professional clean and repair your air ducts. Dirty, clogged ducts create airflow challenges, as do any creases resulting in air leaks. Check your vents and intakes as well for energy-depleting blockages.

4. Remove Debris From the Exterior Unit

Clear all leaves, twigs, and other debris from the outside condenser unit, if applicable. Excessive dirt and debris once again creates airflow issues that cause your system to run harder and longer, resulting in premature wear and tear.

HVAC5. Get an Inspection

Schedule a professional inspection by your local heating contractor to identify small problems before they become significant, expensive issues. Contractors also clean units to help them operate as efficiently as possible. Depending on the age and condition of the system, it may be time to consider an Energy Star® upgrade.
