When you are trained to become a truck driver, most of your practice will occur on dry, predictable roads. Unfortunately, the real world is a much messier place, and truck drivers have to constantly screen for roadway hazards. Here are a few common road hazards that truck drivers should always be aware of and how they can pose dangers during your next haul.

Road Hazards to Watch Out For

1. Construction Zones

When you travel through construction zones, you have to be mindful of changing traffic patterns, harried drivers, signal changes, and even an uneven road surface. Before you start your route, check for large-scale construction projects on major roadways you will be using, and plan for extra time, so you aren’t tempted to speed through areas that are already dangerous.

2. Busy Metropolitan or Residential Areas

Be mindful of busy intersections, bike lanes, ice cream trucks, and pickup and drop-off areas. Pay especially close attention anytime you travel in school zones.

3. Road Debris

Road debris like fallen rocks, tire sections, broken furniture, and even metal screws can pose large risks to your truck since they could puncture tires or cause you to swerve out of the way. Always go the speed limit when you drive, and be cautious around turns or areas where you may not be able to see the approaching landscape.
