Dentures give people the confidence that comes with having a complete smile. If you have a new pair, caring for them will help keep them in top shape. This guide will outline some tips for maintaining your dentures and helping them last.

Do:

Brush them daily.

You will need to brush your dentures every night in order to prevent staining and remove debris that cause bad breath. Since traditional toothpaste is generally too abrasive, gently clean them using a denture cleaning solution and soft-bristled toothbrush. You should also rinse them with water after every meal.

Handle them gently.

Dentures are fragile, so you want to handle them carefully to prevent cracks and broken clasps. When removing or putting them on, grip them gently at the sides. You should also place a towel in the sink while you are cleaning them, which will cushion any falls to prevent breakage.

Don’t:

Leave them out overnight.

denturesDentures should always be moist. Otherwise, they could dry out and lose their shape. This is why you must always place them in water or a denture solution overnight. If you are worried about forgetting, always keep a cup on your nightstand. If you use the specialized solution, be sure to rinse your item before putting it in your mouth.

Skip your dental appointments.

Appointments with a dentist are just as important for dentures as they are for natural teeth. During your checkups, the dentist will check the condition and fit of the appliance. They can make recommendations for better denture care and address any concerns you may have. If necessary, they’ll adjust the fit to help you eat and speak more comfortably.
