LASIK surgery is a popular solution to glasses and contact lenses. However, your eyes are in an extremely sensitive state after the procedure, and you’ll need to follow strict guidelines during recovery. Sticking to these proven do’s and don’ts will minimize side effects and ensure you avoid any complications.

Do:

Protect your eyes.

Following LASIK, you’ll need to protect your eyes from the elements. Wear sunglasses with ultraviolet filters during the day or goggles and protective eyewear if there are heavy winds or precipitation. Ideally, you should relax indoors in a low-light environment immediately following surgery.

Use eye drops correctly.

lasik-tristate-centers-for-sightPrescription eye drops play an important role in recovery. They’ll also keep your eyes hydrated, so use them as directed. Close your eyes for four to five minutes after putting them in, and carefully clean around your eyes. Never use store-bought eye drops unless advised by your eye doctor.

Don’t:

Go swimming.

Avoid swimming in pools for at least two weeks, and don’t swim in lakes for at least one month. You may introduce chemicals and bacteria that can cause post-surgical complications. You’ll also need to be careful about getting water in your eyes while showering for the first week of recovery.

Wear makeup.

Avoid applying eye makeup for one week after surgery. If these products get into your eyes or you accidentally poke your eye with an applicator, you can cause serious damage. After one week, you’ll still need to be careful when applying any face makeup.
