The strain narrow, flat shoes and high heels place on ligaments, muscles, and tendons can lead to painful deformities. During a foot exam, your podiatrist might discover hammertoe is to blame for the discomfort. To prepare for the appointment, learn more about the condition below and ways to correct it.

What Is Hammertoe?

Wearing shoes that don’t support the natural shape of your feet can cause muscle imbalances that slowly alter the foot structure. In the case of hammertoe, the muscles around the middle joint of the second, third, or fourth toe weaken, compromising flexibility. If the muscles can’t straighten or bend the toe, it begins to curve downward, resulting in a noticeable bend that resembles the shape of a hammer.

Along with a change in toe appearance, pain when walking and wearing shoes is commonly associated with hammertoe. The middle joint may rub against the inside of the shoe, causing a corn to form. The friction can also lead to swelling and burning pain.

What Are Common Treatments?

Sugar-Land-Texas-podiatristAlong with wearing footwear with low heels and more room for toes, a podiatrist might recommend exercise to gradually correct the bend. In the early stages, exercise will improve muscle strength. Wearing custom orthotics and splinting the toe are also nonsurgical solutions to straighten the bend.

Without early treatment, the deformity will get worse. The toe can become rigid to the point that a podiatrist might recommend surgery to correct it. At this point, corns and calluses can turn into open sores. When shoe shopping, look for footwear with a wide toebox and ample arch support.
