Christian theology is the study of Christian beliefs and practices. While there are many different types of theology, they all touch upon the same topics. Here are three areas researched by theologians.

3 Topics Studied in Christian Theology

1. Hamartiology

This is the study of sin, and it’s analyzed because theologians believe that once it’s understood, salvation can be found. Hamartiology covers topics like how sin was created, how humanity is affected by sin, and how man must be punished for the original sin. This theology is broken into three different beliefs:

  • All man is guilty of sin because of Adam and Eve’s defiance.
  • Humans are born without responsibility and have the ability to not sin.
  • People aren’t born into sin, but they’ll be impacted by the world around them, which will drive them to sin.

2. Soteriology

christianThis area is the study of salvation, and it covers all aspects of it, including atonement, sanctification, and redemption. Theologians analyze Bible terms and passages and discuss questions about salvation. For example, when someone is saved, are they saved forever regardless of their past sins?

3. Ecclesiology

As the study of the church, ecclesiology delves into what its responsibilities are to God and parishioners and vice versa. A church’s government will differ, but the main polities include Congregational, Presbyterian, and Episcopal. Each has a committee or bishop who handles day-to-day activities of the church.
