Boats are constantly vulnerable to weather, pollution, and animals. A sturdy cover is vital to protect your expensive investment while not in the water. The best covers will protect from UV damage but will allow enough space for the vessel to breathe. Consult the guide below to learn what you need to know about selecting covers.

3 Key Points to Consider When Buying a Boat Cover

1. Type

The two main types of covers are storage and trailering. Storage covers protect the craft when it’s idle. It should fit loosely to allow airflow and prevent mold or smells from getting trapped inside. Trailering covers must fit tightly to sustain high travel speeds on the highway.

2. Fabric

BoatsThe fabric should protect the vessel from UV damage while still allowing water vapor to escape, so mildew doesn’t have a chance to grow. A cotton- polyester blend does not protect well against UV rays. In fact, the UV from the sun will cause the fabric to deteriorate faster. Waterproof vinyl fabrics are great to resist moisture, but the vapor can get locked inside. It does not give the vessel time to breathe or release moisture. If vinyl is your choice, then add cover vents to increase airflow. Synthetic pigment-dyed polyester is extremely durable. It protects against UV rays, is breathable, but is still water-resistant. Fabrics such as these can also prevent animals from scratching their way inside the boat.

3. Color

Dark colors resist UV rays better than light colors. However, dark colors are extremely absorbent, and the heat can still get through. By reflecting the UV rays, the material will last longer, but the air trapped underneath will be much warmer. Although the heat is not as damaging as direct UV light, it’s still smart to be mindful of the temperature under the cover. If you care more about the boat’s temperature but still would like substantial UV protection, select a medium-gray color.
