As an expectant mother, your choices can affect the health of your baby on a daily basis. However, the decision to have a C-section instead of vaginal delivery is usually determined by safety concerns and the advice of your gynecologist. It’s beneficial for expecting parents to understand both procedures going into the last term. The guide below highlights the pros and cons of vaginal deliveries and C-sections.

Vaginal Delivery

Vaginal delivery can be a physically taxing process for the mother, but the recovery time after delivery is typically shorter than a C-section. Mothers who deliver vaginally may be out of the hospital within 48 hours. A vaginal delivery also allows skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding between mother and child sooner. There can be complications and risks from tearing, and many women require stitches after delivery to repair the damage. Overall, if there are no obvious risks to the health of either mother or child, most gynecologists recommend vaginal delivery.

C-Sectiongynecologist

Typically, a C-section is recommended by a gynecologist when vaginal delivery poses a health risk to either the mother or baby. You will know in advance when it’s recommended and will be able to schedule a date for the delivery.  Some women elect to have a C-section for this reason or if they’ve previously experienced a complicated vaginal delivery. Common reasons for a C-section include abnormal fetus position, the fetus is in distress, the labor isn’t progressing, or there’s an issue with the placenta. Although there are risks associated with every surgery, C-sections are common and in most cases, there are fewer risks than a vaginal delivery. It may take a few days of recovery time before you can leave the hospital.

Regardless of the delivery method, the best decision is the one that best fits your comfort and health.
