From driveways and sidewalks to backyard patios, concrete is a beautiful material that can make a big impact on your property. Like with any material, to get the most out of your surfaces, you must provide proper care. Here are some basic concrete maintenance tips to follow to keep these areas in top shape for years to come.

Concrete Maintenance 101

1. Apply Concrete Sealers

Applying a topical sealer to your concrete is one of the best ways to protect it against damage. Concrete sealers repel water and oil, while also increasing the surface’s resistance to abrasion from dust and traffic. For best results, the sealer should be reapplied every few years to ensure lasting protection.

2. Clean Spills Quickly

If the substance is allowed to penetrate the concrete, it will leave lasting stains. Some de-icers and other products can also eat through concrete sealers, destroying the protective barrier and making the surface more vulnerable to staining and structural problems.

3. Repair Cracks

It’s normal for cracks to form in driveways and other concrete surfaces as a result of settling. However, these cracks should be repaired with a patching compound and bonding adhesive sooner rather than later. A large crack could allow water to penetrate to the surface’s subgrade, destabilizing the structure. Loose material should be chiseled out and removed from the crack before it’s filled. Particularly large cracks may also require the use of sand-mix concrete to adequately be filled.
