A puncture in the pan gasket, loose plug, corroded seal, and additional wear and tear can cause transmission fluid leaks. When levels are low, the liquid can’t lubricate mechanical components, cutting short the lifespan of your transmission. Regardless of the cause, the leak should be remedied immediately. If you’re not sure whether you need auto repairs for a leaking transmission, below are a few ways to tell.

3 Telltale Signs Transmission Fluid Is Leaking

1. Puddles Under the Car

As transmission components are located near the undercarriage, fluid will leak from the bottom of the vehicle. The liquid has a red or green tint, so look for colorful puddles on the pavement where you usually park. When the liquid is burnt, it will have a brownish hue. This means fluid levels are low enough that the increased friction is causing the transmission to overheat. If you see this, bring your car in for an auto repair right away.

2. Slow Shifting

3. Strange Smells

The fluid could trickle slowly, which means you might not notice a puddle accumulating under the car. This is especially true if you rarely park in the same spot. In this case, you might smell a cause for concern. Transmission fluid has a noticeable odor. If you smell a sweet or tart aroma each time you get out of the car, and it gets stronger as you get closer to the ground, contact an auto repair technician for help.
