Pockets in women’s clothing, far from common throughout history, first became popular in the 17th century. After that, it was an unpredictable ride to the fashions of today where, once again, pockets are less common. Here’s a quick tour of their colorful history.

The 17th Century: Women’s Pockets Arrive

Internal pockets for women’s clothing didn’t commonly exist until the 1600s. Once adopted, pockets were small and probably nothing like you might imagine. Throughout this period, women would tie small pouches around their waists and hide them beneath petticoats — like mini fanny packs that were difficult to access.

Serving much the same purpose as tiny handbags, pockets continued in this unusual way into the fashion of the late 1800s. Women often made them by hand from old clothes or fabric leftovers, but they could also purchase new, elaborately embroidered pockets. They could carry anything from money, keys, and jewelry to spectacles, scissors, and snuffboxes.

The 18th & 19th Centuries: Fashion Begins to Change

women's clothingBy the late 1700s, women’s clothing began to evolve, quickly putting full petticoats out of style. High waistlines and figure-hugging skirts became the mode, leaving little room for form-spoiling pockets. Women adopted the use of reticules, small decorative bags they could carry much like a contemporary handbag.

During the 1800s, young girls and older, working-class women continued to favor pocket-bearing clothes. Their pockets were often plain, large, and all about function compared to the fancy embroidered pouches of the previous century.

The 20th Century: History Repeats Itself

By the turn of the century, women increasingly sought utility, bringing pockets back into style. Suffragette suits of the early 1900s usually had multiple pockets. When the world went to war, women’s clothing became practical yet again. Trousers and coveralls featuring large pockets became common. Post-war, sleek looks became the norm, phasing out large pockets as history repeated itself yet again. Today, you can find everything from large pockets to sewn-shut seams in blazers, jeans, dresses, and more.
