A spare house key is invaluable if you’re locked out but they can be stolen. To keep it safe, avoid just slipping it under the doormat. Burglars check all the familiar places, which is why it’s important to be creative. There are a number of unique spots to place an extra key. Rather than having to call a locksmith, use these option to hide it.

Where Should You Hide Your Spare House Key?

1. Beneath Your Siding

If you have vinyl siding, slip a key out of sight by placing it between the panels. Attach a piece of thin string or a fishing line, and push the key under the lip. Use the bottom of the siding panels so you don’t have to push space between two of them. Grass and other landscaping can also conceal the string better. Do this on a side of your home with no doors.

2. Inside a Fake Sprinkler Head

locksmithIf you’re willing to invest in a key holder, a fake sprinkler head will do the trick. These look real and will blend in so long as they match your other sprinkler heads. Just make sure that family members know where it is. You don’t want to run over it with the lawnmower or end up damaging other sprinkler heads while you try to find the false one. A locksmith shop may carry options to explore.

3. Behind a Brick

If you have a brick home or natural stone exterior, you can jar a single piece of stone from the base. Cut a small indent on the back and place your spare key into it. Then, return it to its place. As with the siding, do this on lower areas that are covered by foliage to ensure the hiding spot is less noticeable.
