Teeth can wear down and decay over time, but some tend to experience more decay than others. Serious damage or infections can lead to pain inside and around the tooth. This may result in the need for a root canal procedure. Here’s what you should know about this treatment.

Why Is a Root Canal Procedure Performed?

root canalRoot canal treatment is performed to save badly damaged or decayed teeth. It is used to repair teeth that become infected deep enough to affect the pulp, the fleshy inner part of the tooth that houses the nerve. The nerve and pulp are removed, and the tooth is filled with sealant. This is a permanent procedure that can effectively save nearby teeth by removing the infection entirely.

What Happens During the Procedure?

During the procedure, the dentist will numb the area around the tooth. They will then dry the tooth and gums and place a cotton dam in place to keep it dry throughout the procedure. The crown of the tooth is opened, and the pulp is carefully removed. The dentist may insert medication to fight off the infection in the gums. After this, the tooth is cleaned and filled, and the opening is sealed with a temporary filling. You’ll have to return for a permanent crown or filling during a future appointment.

How Do You Care for Your Mouth After the Procedure?

Your tooth and the surrounding area may feel sore for the first few days after the root canal procedure. This is due to natural inflammation and should go away after a day or two but can be eased with over-the-counter pain medication. Minimize chewing in the location of the root canal until a permanent filling is placed to help minimize both pain and potential risk for contaminating or infecting the tooth. You should still brush, floss, and rinse regularly.
