Whether you just started a company or run an established business, joining your community’s chamber of commerce will extend your reach. At networking events, you can establish connections that could turn into beneficial relationships later. To achieve this goal, below are tips to ensure the success of your first networking function and other practices to avoid.

Do:

Introduce yourself to other attendees.

You don’t want to appear standoffish at the event, as it could create a bad first impression. To let others know you are friendly and approachable, make sure to initiate introductions. Introduce yourself to as many chamber of commerce members as possible, as it will help you develop a broad range of contacts and spread the word about your business and what you have to offer.

Hand out your business card.

Versailles-Kentucky-chamber-of-commerceWhen you introduce yourself to fellow members, hand out your business card at the beginning of each conversation. This way, you won’t forget later. By having your business card on file, people will know how to contact you directly or connect with your business website or social media pages for additional information.

Don't:

Keep conversations one-sided.

To start a conversation, you might share a few personal details as an ice-breaker. The main objective of the networking event is to share pertinent information about your business, so navigate the conversation in that direction quickly. Don’t forget to ask questions and let others share information, as it will help you gauge how your business can meet their needs.

Forget to create a contact list.

Don’t end a conversation without asking for a business card. Reserve a space in your wallet or pocket in your purse to hold all the cards you collect. This way, you won’t have to search for them later. As soon as you get home or back to the office, create a list of chamber of commerce contacts and plug each member’s information into your phone or a contacts program on your computer.
