Storage units are helpful for keeping items while you relocate to a new residence, start a major cleaning project, or remodel your home. However, you have to know what items you should leave out of the storage unit for health and safety reasons. Here are a handful of belongings you should never store.

4 Items to Leave Out of a Storage Unit

1. Hazardous Materials

As a general rule, you shouldn’t store any corrosive, flammable, or explosive items in a storage unit. These may include gasoline, pesticides, paint thinners, and fireworks. Additionally, it isn’t safe to store guns and ammunition either.

2. Foods

Even non-perishable food products tend to attract insects and rodents to the storage unit, and these creatures may chew through your documents, appliances, and furniture.

3. Valuables

It’s best not to store anything of value in your unit. Even in the most secure facilities, it’s not worth the risk of having jewelry, coin collections, fine art, and antiques stolen or damaged. Since these items are valuable and often irreplaceable, keep them with you at home.

4. Plants

Plants need sunlight, fresh air, and water to grow healthy, and storage units deprive them of all three. Even if you don’t plan to store plants for very long, they may die in the unit after only a day or two.
