Your dog is a beloved part of your family, but when that family starts growing, it can be pretty stressful for your pup. Taking a few pet care steps will ease the stress that the birth of a baby may cause your canine. Below are a few do’s and don’ts for helping your dog adjust to a new member of the family.

Do:

Begin training immediately.

As soon as possible, work with an obedience school or pet care behavioralist on training your dog to follow basic commands and accommodate your new arrival. After the baby is born, you won’t have time to train them. It could disrupt your household or disturb the baby if your dog is anything less than obedient. They should respond to commands without hesitation and return to their crate or bed when directed while you’re busy tending the baby.

Introduce them to the nursery.

A nursery full of new objects, sights, sounds, and smells will make them curious, if not territorial. Get them acclimated to all that’s new—crib, changing table, bassinet, night light, lotions, musical mobiles, and toys—before the baby is home. The sooner you’re able to set the nursery up, the more accustomed your dog will be to it when the baby comes home.

Don’t:

Wait until the baby arrives to baby-proof the house.

Waiting to block off off-limits zones will cause your dog to associate the baby with negative restrictions. It’ll be unsafe, if your dog becomes jealous and territorial.

Neglect them before or after the baby arrives.

Don’t ignore the emotional pet care needs of your dog. Try not to scold them once the baby comes home. Your dog may be confused and possibly upset by the new arrival. Don’t add to their confusion and hurt by ignoring them. Their feelings of frustration and depression may cause behavioral issues that may be hard to roll back. Instead, show them lots of love, keep up with their pet exams, and make sure your home remains their haven.
