If you own a car, you have probably heard of the transmission. It is an essential part of your vehicle, and proper transmission maintenance is necessary for keeping your car on the road. Here is a guide to help you better understand your vehicle.

What Is a Transmission?

Transmission Basics

Transmissions are necessary for keeping your car running. They can be automatic or manual and will ensure enough power is flowing so you can achieve needed speeds. Transmissions rely on a series of gears and gear trains that control speed and torque conversions so there is enough power to get to the wheels.

Manual transmissions feature different gears that must be adjusted for different speeds and terrains similar to the way a bike gear shifter operates. Just like a bicycle chain, the engine and transmission temporarily disconnect when you shift. Pushing the clutch on a manual vehicle controls this disconnection; once the gear changes, you can release the clutch. On the other hand, an automatic transmission does the shifting for you. The torque converter detects changes and will shift to compensate for acceleration and deceleration.

One key area of the transmission is the fluid. It lubricates the transmission and helps the component with rotational speed and temperature range much like coolant does in the radiator of your vehicle. Without this essential fluid, metal components and seals will grind against each other and degrade, leading to a need for transmission repairs because the gears will struggle to change when you need them to.

Proper Transmission Maintenance

Unlike engine oil, transmission fluid should be handled by a professional. Check your owner’s manual to know how often transmission fluid should be changed or speak with your auto repair mechanic. Mileage ranges can vary from every 30,000 to every 100,00 miles — depending on the make, model, and year. Many shops recommended checking levels when you bring your car in for regular services such as oil changes and tire rotations.

Besides changing fluid periodically, leak detection should also be part of transmission maintenance. Mechanics can find the source of a leak that may be affecting your levels and causing trouble in your engine. They should also ensure filters aren’t clogged. This area catches excess fluid to help regulate pressure. When there is a blockage, you may hear odd noises, smell burning odors, or your car will struggle to shift gears.
