For many people, owning a classic car isn’t just a hobby. It’s a passionate investment, and so it’s imperative that you keep the vehicle in mint condition. This typically means putting it into storage so they aren’t affected by everyday wear and tear or the elements. When storing yours in a facility, the following tips will help make sure it stays protected.

Storage Tips for Classic Cars

1. Get It Detailed

Before taking it to the facility, it’s important to have the vehicle thoroughly cleaned and detailed. This isn’t just so you have a pretty car whenever it’s time to take it out again. Any dust, dirt, or debris that’s left on the exterior can scratch the paint. Meanwhile, dirt and crumbs on the inside may attract pests.

2. Perform Maintenance Tasks

storageAnother thing that needs to be done prior to putting a classic car into storage is to take care of routine maintenance issues. Change the oil to avoid rusting the engine. Fill up the gas tank as well, and add a fuel stabilizer to prevent the fuel from gunking up. You should also fill up all of the tires a bit over the suggested PSI to account for the natural deflation that will occur. Finally, if it’s going to be stored long-term, disconnect the battery so it doesn’t drain while not being used.

3. Make Regular Visits

Beyond just providing the peace of mind that the vehicles are still safe and sound, it’s important to visit once or twice a month. When visiting, start the engine up and run it at a fast idle so that the engine warms up, and turn on the air conditioner for at least 10 minutes to lubricate the compressor seals. When possible, you should also drive the car long enough that it heats up the exhaust system. Doing these tasks keeps all of the internal parts operating efficiently so there are no issues when you’re really ready to take it out again.
