Self-storage units are the perfect place to keep off-season clothing so  they don’t take up valuable space around your home. No matter where you store clothing while it’s not in use, you want to make sure that your items are fresh and ready to be worn once the seasons change again. To keep moths, other pests, and odors from ruining your clothes, keep these tips in mind.

How to Protect Your Clothing While in Storage

1. Clean Clothing First

If you store your clothes when they’re not fully clean, the dirt and odors will likely worsen as the garments sit in a self-storage unit over time. Additionally, there might be stains that you didn’t initially notice. They will have months to set fully into the fabric, and pests are more likely to target clothing that has food stains or crumbs on it. Make sure to wash and thoroughly dry your clothes before storing them.

2. Seal Containers Fully

Just make sure they’re closed completely so bugs can’t squeeze their way inside. Additionally, consider a cedar chest, since cedar has a pest-repelling scent, as long as the chest seals fully.

3. Use Lavender & Dryer Sheets

Lavender has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and pest-repelling properties, so even if your container is not completely sealed, pests won’t be tempted to come inside. Include some dried lavender in sachets or wrapped in small pieces of fabric so it doesn’t touch your clothing directly. You can also add a few dryer sheets in between clothes so they smell fresh when you take them out of storage. Use these methods in addition to storing clothes in sealed containers for extra protection.
