Restoring an old car can be a rewarding project for any automotive enthusiast. However, it takes knowledge and hard work to complete the job in a way that will add value and impress experts at your local auto show. If you’re thinking about taking on a restoration project, here are some of the best practices to keep in mind, as well as some common mistakes to avoid.

Do:

Take photos throughout the process.

Photos are invaluable throughout the restoration process. Not only do they document your progress and show potential buyers or visitors at your local auto show how far the vehicle has come, but they can also help you accurately place parts and remember how different components were assembled.

Position the car carefully.

Once you start a restoration project, you’ll need to remove the battery, gas tank, engine, and parts of the body of the car. This means you’re not going to be able to move the entire vehicle or shift it easily within your workspace. Before getting started, make sure it’s set up in a perfect spot within your garage or work area, with plenty of room to move around it and access all of the power and equipment you’ll need throughout the project.

Don’t:

Overlook research.

auto showResearch is a huge part of the restoration process, especially for historic vehicles. Ideally, you should research the car before you purchase if to make sure it has all of the original parts that are important to you. Then, speak with multiple restoration shops to get as many expert opinions as possible about what the vehicle needs and how to best go about achieving the desired outcome.

Opt for new and different parts.

If you’re rebuilding a car for your own personal use, then you can make decisions based on preference. However, if you’re restoring an old car to display at an auto show or eventually sell, keep the original parts wherever possible and try to emulate what the vehicle was initially like. Switching out a lot of parts with newer, faster, or different options will likely harm the car’s value since people often place a high value on the historical significance.
