Whether you’re pregnant for the first time or you’re an experienced mom-to-be, you should be concerned about bleeding. You should contact your OB-GYN about any questions. Not every cause of bleeding warrants an emergency room visit. Understanding the reasons spotting occurs during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy may give you peace of mind.

Common Causes of Bleeding OB-GYNs See During Pregnancy

1. Irritated Cervix

ob-gynYour cervix becomes irritated more easily during pregnancy. You may see a little discharge after rigorous activity, a pelvic exam, or a transvaginal ultrasound.

2. Progesterone Supplements

Your OB-GYN may prescribe progesterone to encourage conception or support your pregnancy. These supplements can cause light bleeding, but it’s typically harmless.

3. Implantation of the Embryo

You might see blood around the time your menstrual period would have happened. At this point, some women don’t know they’re pregnant. Light spotting means the embryo is fertilized and has implanted itself in your uterus, which is a good sign. If you see a few drops of blood for a few days, it may be enough to need a liner.

4. Difficult Bowel Movements

Constipation, a common problem during pregnancy, can cause you to strain when using a restroom. There may be some spotting due to irritation, so drink plenty of water to facilitate the process.
