How Do Funeral Traditions Differ Among Different Religions?

1. Buddhism

This often includes cremation or a water burial. A monk may also give a simple sermon for the funeral attendees, and it’s often customary for the family to wear white. 

2. Christianity

During the service, the deceased is usually laid in a casket in front of the attendees. There are generally prayers, readings, and songs during the service, and Catholics may include the Eucharist tradition. While many Christian denominations lean toward burial, some have allowed cremation.

3. Islam

Muslims believe that the deceased should remain in a coffin until a day of judgment, in which time they will be resurrected. Families will generally bury their deceased as soon as possible, often within a day. The body is placed facing Mecca, and some customs do not encourage the use of a coffin. Generally, Muslims do not partake in cremation, since they believe that the physical body is resurrected. 

4. Judaism

In Judaism, the deceased is generally buried as soon as possible, and the body is never left alone. A burial committee washes the body and sits with them until the burial. Traditionally, Jewish communities don’t cremate the deceased, but more progressive movements within the religion embrace this practice. Following the funeral service, the family then enters a seven-day period where they mourn, celebrate the life of the deceased, and spend time with loved ones.
