Water softening is a type of water treatment that removes hard minerals through the use of a salt solution. Hard water can be extremely tough on appliances, pipes, fixtures, and dinnerware, and water softening offers a viable solution that extends the longevity of these items. To better understand this common kind of water treatment, below are several answers to common questions about hard water and the softening process.

Learning More About Water Softening

What is hard water?

Hard water is water with excessive amounts of minerals like calcium, magnesium, and manganese. As water flows through limestone, gypsum, and other types of rock present in the earth, it naturally picks up these minerals. Water is considered hard when it has one grain of minerals per gallon.

Is hard water dangerous to your health?

water treatmentThe body needs certain amounts of calcium and magnesium to maintain optimal health, but too much is a potential problem. High levels may lead to cardiovascular issues and have been known to cause dry skin.

Should you soften your water?

Water treatment through softening offers numerous benefits. It reduces calcium and lime buildup on the interior of pipes; this buildup can lead to clogs and water pressure issues. The reduced hard mineral content of soft water is easier on appliances and fixtures that utilize water, from dishwashers and your freezer's icemaker to showers, baths, and sinks. Effective soft water treatment can also result in fewer water spots on glasses and flatware, and it suds up more easily, requiring less soap and detergent to get things clean.

How does water softening work?

Water softeners use salt ions to attracts the ions present in the hard minerals of the water. The salt and mineral ions essentially switch places, so salt replaces the harder and more damaging minerals. The process begins when water softener salt — either potassium chloride or sodium chloride — is added to the softener.
