Wearing a tailored suit will make a positive first impression at any outing. The garment elongates the body, making you appear leaner and taller. Moving around all day can wear the fabric and fade its color, however. In addition to regular trips to a dry cleaner for safe maintenance, here’s a guide with more advice for keeping your suit in top shape.

How to Maintain a Suit

1. Clean With a Brush

From dirt on the ground to pollutants in the air, various types of particles could end up on your clothing. When abrasive grime is left to accumulate, it can break down the fibers and dye. The suit will gradually look duller and lose its shape. To maintain the original fit and hue, brush the suit after each use. A brush with animal hair bristles will remove these particles without snagging on the fabric.

2. Use Wooden Hangers

The wire could also stretch the fabric, causing the piece to sag. Use wooden hangers to prevent damage. Wood is durable and the wide shoulders will help maintain the shape of the jacket.

3. Steam Out Wrinkles

Never take an iron to a suit. The extreme heat could scorch the fabric and leave unwanted creases. Even on the lowest setting, continuous ironing will slowly wear at the delicate cloth. Between trips to the dry cleaner, use a steamer to deodorize the suit and get out wrinkles without causing damage.
