What to Ask Before Hiring a Locksmith

Consumers & Business Owners need to be vigilant in their search for a Professional Locksmith.  In many states (including OHIO) locksmiths are NOT required to be licensed to operate.  Unfortunately, this sometimes results in unscrupulous persons posing as LOCKSMITHS.  Below are some tips to help you find a reputable locksmith in your area.

Start by asking “Are You Insured, Bonded, or Accredited?  Also:

  • Verify their insurance coverage by requesting a copy of their Certificate of Insurance & Bond.
  • Check their rating with the BBB or local Chamber of Commerce.
  • Ask for proof that they are active members of ALOA and/or SAVTA (National Associations).
  • Verify that they have a brick & mortar store you can visit to view products and/or handle any warranty issues that may arise later.
  • Ask if the company’s locksmiths are uniformed and driving lettered service vehicles. Be aware that many “scammers” work out of the back of unmarked cars or vans.

Follow up by asking additional specific questions, such as:

  • What is your pricing and rate structure?
  • Do you give FREE estimates?
  • Can you give me a written “fixed rate” proposal before starting my project?
  • What is the warranty for the products, and the labor that is being performed?
  • What are your standard working hours and prices?
  • What is your Over-Time rate schedule, including Weekends and Holidays?
