Golf courses have rules posted that keep the place clean and running smoothly, such as sticking to tee times that you reserve. There are also some unspoken ones about golfing etiquette that you should familiarize yourself with.

A Guide to Golf Course Etiquette

1. Quietly Wait for Your Turn

Golf requires focus. Any type of noise can be distracting, whether it’s talking, opening food, or tapping away on your phone. Movement can be problematic too. If you’re pacing or fidgeting and your shadow is in the putter’s line of sight, it’ll be more difficult for them to focus and clearly see what they’re doing.

2. Leave the Course Better Than You Found It

golf coursesA golf course filled with holes is not only unattractive but also potentially hazardous if someone trips. If you knick the green when you swing, tamp the ground back down, and fill in any divots you find along the way to maintain the course for everyone’s enjoyment.

3. Safety First

Golf balls and clubs move fast and land hard, so take precautions to ensure they don’t hit anyone. Yell, “Fore!” whenever your ball heads in the direction of other golfers so they know to avoid it. Wear proper attire, including gloves for grip, so you don’t accidentally let go of your golf club on enthusiastic swings. Give golfers who are swinging plenty of room to avoid being struck. Likewise, don’t swing if people walk across your range.
