When it comes to tree care, you’re likely familiar with branch pruning, but root pruning isn’t as commonly known. Here’s a quick guide to explain what this type of pruning is and if you need it.

What Is It?

tree careRoot pruning is the process of trimming the roots of an established tree or shrub to encourage growth when a tree needs to be relocated or to contain growth in a potted plant. Once the tree is pulled from the ground, the longer roots, called the anchor roots, are trimmed away. These are the roots that branch out from established trees to anchor and support it. Cutting them encourages them to grow once the tree is replanted into the ground.

Do You Need to Do It?

Unless you plan on relocating the shrub or tree, root pruning isn’t a part of routine tree care; however, there are a few exceptions. Dwarf trees, which are intended to be smaller in stature, undergo regular root pruning to prevent them from growing too tall. Root pruning shocks the tree and prevents growth. This tree care task also helps to control potted plants that are getting too big for their containers. Trimming the roots and adding new soil will keep their growth under control.

How Often and When Should It Be Done?

Potted plants: Prune the roots of dwarf trees and plants when you notice them getting too large.

Relocating a tree: When it comes to relocating trees, perform this task a year before the relocation. Although root pruning won’t damage the tree, it causes it stress, which is why you should do it ahead of time to give your tree a chance to recoup before the relocation.
