Basements are naturally prone to flooding. They are, after all, the lowest level of your home. Transitional seasons like fall are a particularly risky time for flooding. If you’re a homeowner with a wet basement, you should call for an inspection before the damage gets worse. Your basement may require foundation or interior waterproofing.

What Causes Basement Flooding?

Several different wet basementfactors put you at risk for a wet basement. The first is unsatisfactory lot grading. This issue means the land surrounding your house slopes down naturally, promoting water to flow towards your basement. An old, unmaintained foundation that has started cracking can also cause seeping and flooding.  During a traditionally wet season like fall, the constant rise in the water table exposes weakness in your aging foundation, and any downspouts draining near the house will exacerbate the problems.

How to Prevent Basement Flooding

There are a few steps to lessen the stress on your foundation and avoid a wet basement this fall. First, make sure to keep your gutters clear of leaves. If the gutters are backed up and start draining improperly, it will overflow into your yard and the foundation. You should also cover your basement windows and the window wells around them, to stop moisture from leaking through the frame. And when you are designing your home landscape, leave a sizable gap between your mulched beds and the home siding, to prevent pooling or soil sloping. Ensure at least six inches of the foundation is visible above your yard, to prevent moisture seeping in through the framework gap.
