Dental implants are replacement teeth that look and feel very similar to real teeth. They help individuals who have lost a tooth regain their smile and chewing strength. The procedure for a tooth implant may seem complex, but it’s a straightforward process that preserves your oral health.

What to Expect When Receiving a Dental Implant

Before the Procedure

dental implantBefore your dentist can set an implant, they’ll take an extensive look at your teeth, jaw, gums, and overall oral health. They’ll assess your bone density and jaw structure to plan your dental work and examine your medical history to ensure there is no medication or underlying illness that may cause complications. Then, they’ll take x-rays and an imprint of your bite which will be used to plan the placement of your implants.

During the Procedure

Dental implants are completed in stages spread over multiple visits. During the first visit, your dentist will numb your jaw and gums around the site. Then, they’ll make an incision in the gums and create a hole. A titanium root implant will be fitted into your jaw bone. You’ll need to wait a minimum of four months for the anchor to adhere to the jawbone, and then you’ll visit the dentist for a second appointment to fit your full crown to the implant.

After the Procedure

After your dental implant is set in place, you may have some swelling, soreness, and minor bleeding. Avoid chewing anything hard on the anchor itself; gradually work from liquids to soft food, and then to a more varied diet as you heal. It’s imperative that you practice good oral hygiene after both the initial root implant and the full crown have been inserted. This is because implant sites are susceptible to infection and need to stay clean, so brush twice a day and floss as normal.  You should be able to return to work the day following the implant procedure.
