Dental phobias are common among children and can lead to a lifetime of poor oral care. Establish a positive relationship and association with their dentist to help them overcome their fear. Here are a few ways you can prepare if they have an exam coming up.

How to Help Your Child Overcome Their Fear of the Dentist

1. Practice at Home

dentistPerform mock exams to help your child understand the dentist’s role in their oral health. Have your little one play the part of the dentist. As they inspect your teeth, explain what cavities and plaque are, and how brushing and flossing help. Avoid scary words, like “hurt” or “drill,” so that they don’t associate pain with the dentist.

2. Schedule a Meeting

Part of dental phobia is walking into an unfamiliar setting. Schedule a meeting so that your child can check out the office, meet the hygienist and dentist, and get a grasp of the sounds, sights, and smells. Knowing what to expect will make them feel more comfortable when they return. This is also an ideal time to notify the staff of your little one’s nerves so that they know to take extra steps to keep them comfortable during the exam.

3. Bring Distractions

During your child’s exam, keep their mind off of what’s happening by letting them listen to music or watch a movie on a phone or tablet. Bring a favored stuffed animal, blanket, or toy for comfort, and let them hold it in the chair. Check with their staff to ensure anything you plan on bringing won’t get in their way.
