Deadbolts are essential to the security of your home. They’re difficult to tamper with and combine easily with existing locks to create an impenetrable barrier. However, it’s only a matter of time before the materials begin to wear out and require a replacement. Here’s what you should know to ensure you obtain the correct bolt and complete the installation correctly.

5 Steps for Replacing a Deadbolt

1. Compare the Key

Before heading out to the hardware store, take a moment to figure out which brand you have on the other doors. This will allow you to find a matching replacement and alleviate the need to acquire an entirely new key.

2. Take Measurements

Products tend to change, which means that the bolt you purchase might not fit in the opening. Measure the diameter of the hole and the distance from the hole to the door frame. This way, if the matching product doesn’t fit, you’ll have a better chance of finding one that does.

3. Remove the Old Lock

boltUsing a screwdriver, take out each of the screws along the inside of the door to loosen the interior components. Remove the screws from the front of the bolt and slide it out of the opening. Make sure to account for all of the pieces and check that the openings are completely clear.

4. Install the New Bolt

Set the strike plate in the opening along the side of the door and screw it into place. Carefully thread the keyhole component through the center from the outside of the door and attach the interior component on the other side. Screw each piece into place by hand until they’re fully secure.

5. Test It Out

Open and close the door a few times to ensure that the strike plate clears the frame. Turn the lock, and test how smooth it slides into place. If there are any catches, you may have to remove the strike plate and sand down the wood a little to create a more snug fit.
