If you are like many homeowners, you probably don’t give your septic system much thought until something goes wrong. Other than scheduling a septic tank cleaning every few years, you might not perform much additional maintenance on your system. To keep it in good condition, however, there are a few maintenance tips you should keep in mind. Here’s what you need to know.

Do:

Have your system inspected.

An annual inspection of your septic system ensures that potential issues, such as harsh chemicals damaging the tank, are spotted and corrected before they become major problems. Routine inspections in between septic tank cleanings by a licensed professional will ensure that your system is operating properly, preventing leaks, backups, and other issues.

Use water wisely.

Even small, slow leaks, like a dripping faucet, can increase the amount of wastewater produced each day, putting a greater strain on your septic system. Fix leaks as soon as you spot them, and avoid creating excess wastewater in other ways, as well. For instance, don't run the dishwasher and washing machine at the same time, and only use them when you have a full load. Finally, install low-flow fixtures to reduce water usage.

Take care of the drainfield.

To avoid packing down the soil and cracking pipes, never park or allow others to park their cars over the drainfield.

Don’t:

Flush non-biodegradable items.

Only flush waste and toilet paper down the toilet. Flushing other items, such as diapers, feminine hygiene products, or cigarette butts, can cause clogs and backups. Be cautious, even when using products labeled flushable, as they may be harmful to your system and cause problems during the septic tank cleaning process.

Overuse cleaners.

Harsh chemical cleaners, including those containing bleach or ammonia, can harm your septic system. This includes toilet and drain cleaners. Use these products sparingly when cleaning, or clean with natural products, such as vinegar, instead.

Use additives.

Using additives in your septic system can add solids to the tank and cause clogs in the drainfield. Some can also lead to pollution in the soil and water. If you must use an additive, only use an approved product under the direction of a septic tank cleaning and maintenance professional.
