It’s normal to be nervous when you need a root canal, even if that fear is unwarranted. Fortunately, by understanding the reasons why root canals are necessary as well as what happens during the procedure, you can stay calm with the dentist. Here’s what you should know.

Who Needs a Root Canal?

Root canals remove infected pulp and nerves from the inside of the teeth, helping dentists preserve the tooth structure. You may need a root canal anytime you experience deep, significant dental decay, or when the tooth is subjected to trauma that could harm the interior pulp, such as a crack or fracture.

How Are They Performed?

dentistThe dentist will start by taking a series of X-rays to determine whether a root canal could save your tooth. Next, they numb the entire area around the tooth and gums to prevent any discomfort during the procedure. After, they make a small access point in the surface of the tooth to remove the interior nerves and infected pulp. They use small dental files to clean the roots of the teeth.

Next, the tooth interior is cleaned, dried, and sanitized to remove bacteria, then the tooth is filled with a rubber compound. Because teeth without a blood supply tend to be more brittle, your dentist will apply a protective crown.

What Should You Do After the Procedure?

After, you can eat and drink as normal. However, the area around the tooth may be sore for a few days following the procedure. To stay comfortable and prevent infection, the dentist may prescribe painkillers or antibiotics. You should take any medications prescribed to you carefully, and report any new changes with the tooth to the dentist immediately.
