When decorating a bedroom or living space, your furniture fabric sets the foundation for the room’s style. Many designers will choose to mix fabric patterns to add depth and character to the room. However, mastering this mix and match technique can be tricky. The following are some design techniques to help you match fabrics in your living room or bedroom.

Mixing Fabric Patterns? How to Make Your Furniture Look Flawless

Mix Organic & Geometric

If you aren’t sure where to start, try this classic trick for mixing fabrics. Most patterns are either organic or geometric, meaning that they feature some sort of botanical imagery or a shape design. When choosing fabrics, try mixing one of each. For example, if you have a striped couch, try placing floral pillows on top. You can do the same for geometric pillows, a throw blanket with leaves, and a solid-colored couch. Including these elements together creates a unique look in your bedroom or living room furniture.

Balance the Scale

Smaller pieces, like pillows, often have smaller-scale patterns. This includes tiny florals, small polka dots, and gingham. When mixing fabrics, it can be helpful to match large-scale and small-scale patterns together. This will create balance in the room’s design.

Mix Pops of Color with Neutrals

Bold or bright colored furniture can be tricky. If you’re on the fence about committing to a bold statement piece, neutral colored fabrics are the best way to go. By having neutral furniture, you’re able to bring in pops of color with décor. Try using bright colored or patterned pillows on a gray or beige sofa. Tie in the same bright colors or patterns in your curtains, rugs, and wall art. Use a patterned comforter with white or gray headboards. Even lamps can bring in pops of color in a room with neutral walls and flooring.
