Laser skin rejuvenation, or laser peel, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and skin problems such as acne scars and age spots on the face. It uses concentrated beams of light to remove the layers of irregular skin and leaves you with a more balanced skin tone. If you’re interested in this type of procedure, you might have questions. Here are the answers to the most common ones.

What to Know About Laser Skin Rejuvenation

Are you a good candidate for this procedure?

Patients with fine lines around their eyes, forehead, or mouth or minor scars from acne benefit from laser skin rejuvenation. It’s not recommended for people with very dark skin or those who currently have acne. If you’re prone to cold sores around the mouth, this procedure may trigger breakouts. The time of year can play a role as well—doctors recommend getting it done in the fall since patients may experience hypersensitivity to sun exposure.

How do you prepare for laser skin resurfacing?

If you think you’re a good candidate, schedule an appointment with a medical laser expert to discuss your skin issues. Based on your medical history and health, they’ll figure out whether this treatment is the right option for you. 10 days before the surgery, you’ll need to avoid taking any medications that affect clotting, including ibuprofen and aspirin. Additionally, don’t smoke during the two weeks before the procedure.

What should you expect from the treatment?

laser skin rejuvenationThe doctor will either numb the areas with a local anesthetic or sedate you, depending on how much you want to be done. They’ll treat each wrinkle around the forehead, eyes, and mouth. If you’re simply improving certain areas of the face, the procedure takes between 30 and 45 minutes. For a complete face treatment, it may take close to two hours.

What happens after the procedure?

24 hours after the treatment, clean the area four to five times each day. To prevent any scabbing, apply petroleum jelly. It may take between 10 and 20 days for the skin to fully heal. There may also be some minor swelling, which can be relieved with ice packs or a prescribed steroid.
