A dead car battery is one of the most common reasons that drivers call for roadside assistance. Without a charge in your battery, you aren’t going anywhere. Fortunately, if you know the most common causes behind a dead battery, you can be proactive in avoiding them.

The Common Causes for Dead Battery Roadside Assistance Calls

1. Leaving Lights On

roadside assistanceThe lights in your vehicle rely on the electrical system for power. If you leave those lights on when you leave your vehicle parked somewhere, they will slowly drain the battery until it eventually dies. Avoid doing this by always checking that your headlights and interior lights are turned off after parking. Check that you do not leave any doors open; if they are not completely closed, the interior lights will stay on for hours. Check that the trunk or rear hatch is completely closed; the light located in that area may also drain the battery.

2. Using Accessories With the Engine Off

Other accessories rely on the electrical system as well, such as your radio or GPS. You can use these with the engine turned off, but never for longer than a few minutes as this will drain the battery and leave you calling for roadside assistance. When you park and use these systems, leave your engine idling so the alternator will recharge the battery as you use it.

3. Aged Battery

The average vehicle battery will last around five years. Know when you had yours installed and once it reaches around four years of age, have your mechanic test the charge with each oil change. They’ll tell you when it’s no longer holding enough of a charge. You’ll also know your battery is on its way out if you must regularly try multiple times to start the vehicle or if your lights begin to flicker or dim.
