If you have a ductless air conditioner at home, you have washable filters. Most people are familiar with disposable screens, but not everyone knows about washable ones. If you don't routinely clean the screens, then dust and other contaminants remain in your home’s air. And your unit works harder to cool your home. Combating clogs may lead to expensive air conditioner repairs. Fortunately, cleaning the filters is easy.

How to Clean Your Ductless AC Filters

1. Remove the Filter

Air conditoner repairsBefore removing the filter, make sure your unit is off for your safety. You don't want to get shocked or damage the unit.

Locate the filter. It’s typically behind the head unit cover if you have a mini-split or other standard ductless system. Lift the cover and gently remove the filters, which are sitting on top of the coils.

2. Vacuum the Debris

You can use the brush attachment on your vacuum to remove dust and debris from the screen. Use the vacuum cleaner on a low suction setting to avoid any damage to the filter.

3. Wash the Filter

Use the spray nozzle in your kitchen sink to rinse away black matter. Use warm water and gently spray until the dirt is gone. If the component is especially dirty, you can use a sponge with a vinegar-water solution to remove any build-up. If you allow the build-up to remain, you may eventually have costly air conditioner repairs. The unit may burn out if the air can’t flow. Allow the filter to air dry completely before putting it back in the unit.

4. Pick a Schedule

In the summer, your AC works longer and harder. Therefore, wash your screen monthly to keep them clean and your unit working efficiently. If either you or your family members have allergies, clean the filters monthly. Refer to the manual on your AC unit or ask an air conditioner repair company for specific recommendations on screen cleaning frequency.
