Pillows and comforters take up a lot of space when not in use. If you have limited room at home for extra bed linens, bringing them to a storage facility could be the answer. To ensure your bedding sheets remain fresh, intact, and free of mold, though, it’s important to take a few extra steps when packing them up.

3 Tips for Preparing Bed Linens for Storage

1. Wash & Dry Them

storageIt’s probably tempting to just box up your linens at the end of the season and worry about washing them when they come out of storage. Even if the bedding looks relatively clean, though, it’s undoubtedly covered with skin cells, dust, and other debris, which can attract pests. Wash all blankets, comforters, and sheets well and make sure they’re completely dry before folding them up for storage.

2. Use Plastic Tubs or Cotton Bags

Cotton bags are ideal for storing bedding because they protect the contents from dirt, dust, and pests while still allowing airflow, so moisture can escape. The next best option is using plastic tubs that aren't airtight. Avoid storing your bedding in cardboard boxes, which pests can easily eat through. Plastic bags are also problematic because they won’t release any moisture that gets trapped, thereby promoting mold and mildew.

3. Stock Up on Cedar Balls

Cedar balls are a great solution for controlling odors and pests. Not only will their aroma keep your bedding from getting musty, but the natural oils in the wood will deter moths. Pop a few balls in with every piece of bedding before zipping the bag or closing the tub.
